Did you know?

  • Our Musical Director, Richard Buxton, began singing Gilbert & ullivan in his mid-thirties and played a succession of (middle-aged and elderly) juvenile leads before a perceptive director finally allowed him to act his age. He took up the conductor's baton with Halifax G&S in 2009 as they couldn't afford to pay anyone (Richard's words). His remuneration for this show was not disclosed.
  • This production did introduce a first for the Society - a glossy A4 size programme (we are easily excited).
  • Take a look at our previous 8 productions of "The Gondoliers".

  • The very first production of "The Gondoliers" was on the 7th December 1889 at the Savoy Theatre. It ran for 554 performances, closing on 20th June 1891. Interestingly, "The Mikado", "Patience" and "HMS Pinafore" all had longer first runs. Note, our run was somewhat shorter.
